幻となったノキアの実験的デザイン
フィンランドの携帯電話メーカー・ノキアが描いた未来のデバイスたちが、20年以上の時を経て姿を現した。1月中旬から公開されたデザインアーカイブには、今日の最新技術を予見するような革新的なアイデアの数々が眠っている。

1997年、ノキアはくまのプーさんのかたちをした、子ども向け携帯電話のアイデアをスケッチした。12年後には、手首に巻きつけて外観まで変化する電話を構想した。これらは製品化されることはなかったコンセプトだが、ノキアデザインアーカイブで閲覧できる。
ノキアデザインアーカイブは、フィンランド・ヘルシンキのアアルト大学によるオンラインポータルだ。約700点が掲載されているが、実際のアーカイブ全体は2万点にも及ぶ。現在ウェブサイト上で閲覧可能なものは「氷山の一角」に過ぎないと、リードリサーチャーのアンナ・バルトネンは語る。バルトネンはかつて12年間ノキアに在籍し、デザインリサーチと未来予測部門の責任者を務めていた人物だ。
この展示の多くは1990年代半ばから2000年代初頭にかけて作られたもので、電子機器が小型化し、インターネットがモバイルコンピューティングを可能にした時代の変化を反映している。コミュニケーションの新時代の到来は、ノキアでの10年間にわたる大胆な実験を促した。デザイナーは新技術が年齢や興味、文化によって、どのように人々の生活に適応し得るのかを考えるよう求められた。バルトネンは、「アメリカ東海岸のティーンエイジャーが欲しいものは？ あるいは、インドのおばあちゃんにとって重要なのは何か？」といった問いを挙げている。
アーカイブには「レンガ」の愛称で知られる「Nokia 3310」や、『マトリックス』にも登場したネオの「バナナフォン」のようなモデルが収められている。また、これまで忘れ去られていたり、一度も公開されていなかったりする興味深いコンセプトも紹介されている。
