日本航空(JAL)と福岡国際空港は、10月26日から搬送用車両(トーイングトラクター)の自動運転レベル4による運用を開始した。JALによる自動運転レベル4車両の導入は、羽田・成田空港に次いで3空港目で、首都圏以外の空港では初めて。福岡空港内の国内貨物上屋と地上支援機材置場を結ぶ走行ライン約1.7kmについて、貨物の完全無人搬送を実現し、省人化と効率化を進める。自動運転レベル4は、特定条件下での完全無人運転。グランドハンドリング業界の人材不足や、利用が拡大する福岡空港の課題に対応するため、国交省が推進する「空港業務DX」の一環として導入するもの。空港内の交通ルール改訂や走行ルート上の環境整備など、JALと福岡空港がハード・ソフト両面で連携し運用開始に結びつけた。旅客・貨物ともに需要が拡大しているという福岡空港で早期に自動運転技術を確立させ、運転操作に起因する事故リスクの抑制を図る。また、地方基幹空港における持続可能な運用体制構築へ向けたモデルケースと位置づけている。
