小惑星に探査機を意図的に衝突、成功したミッション「DART」の一部始終
将来的に地球に飛来する可能性がある小惑星に、探査機をぶつけて軌道を変える──。そんな事態を想定した実験が、2022年9月26日（米国時間）に無事に成功した。

まるで映画『ドント・ルック・アップ』で起きた事態を思わせる今回のミッションは「DART（Double Asteroid Redirection Test）」と呼ばれ、探査機の衝突によって小惑星の軌道をずらせるのかを探ることが目的だった。実験対象となった小惑星は「ディモルフォス」と呼ばれる「ディディモス」という小惑星の衛星で、地球から約1,100万kmの距離にある。
今回のミッションで使われた無人探査機は自動販売機ほどの大きさで、時速14,000マイル（約23,000km）という前代未聞のスピードでディモルフォスに衝突した。NASAの科学者たちは、実験でディモルフォスを完全に破壊できたわけではないと考えているが、ディディモスを周回する軌道の距離がわずかに短くなったと推測している。
事実だとすれば、探査機による衝突が小惑星の軌道を変えられる可能性を証明できる。この点については、天文学者たちによる調査結果を待つことになる。
