夏の全国高校野球、大会5日目の第1試合は、岩手の花巻東高校が小刻みに得点を重ねて愛媛の新田高校に4対2で勝って2回戦に進みました。

花巻東は2回、2アウト二塁三塁のチャンスで8番の齋藤蒼梧選手のタイムリーで1点を先制しました。

このあと3対2と1点をリードして迎えた8回には、1アウト三塁からライトへの浅いフライに打ち取られた場面で、新田の外野手が内野手に返球したわずかな隙をついて、三塁ランナーの赤間史弥選手がホームにかえり2点差に突き放しました。

投げては、先発したエースの萬谷堅心投手がたびたびピンチを作りましたが、1イニングでの複数失点は防いで7回を2失点にまとめました。

一方の新田は5回に2番の木下春空選手が犠牲フライを打ち、6回には8番の秋山祐太選手のタイムリーで、1点差に迫りましたが、追いつけませんでした。
