Qualcomm Technologiesは、SpaceXが「Starlink Mobile」の米国向け地上5G網に、基地局向けプラットフォーム「Qualcomm Dragonwing」を採用したと発表した。SpaceXは2027年から全米で順次展開を始め、複数年の契約期間中に数万カ所に基地局を設置するという。
Starlink Mobileは、スマートフォンと衛星を直接つなぎ、地上の携帯電話網の圏外でも通信できるようにするサービス。SpaceXは次世代衛星でスマートフォン向けの衛星通信を高速化するとともに、米国では衛星網と地上5G網を一体化する計画。
基地局は、アンテナ側で無線信号を扱う無線ユニット(RU)と、データの送受信に必要な信号処理を担う分散ユニット(DU)で構成する。RUには「Dragonwing QRU100」、DUには「Dragonwing QDU100」を採用。QDU100は、変調や誤り訂正など、低遅延が求められる5Gの物理層(Layer 1)の処理を担い、商用向けのLayer 1ソフトウェアと組み合わせて使う。
無線ユニットは、送信64系統、受信64系統(64T64R)のMassive MIMOに対応する。多数のアンテナを協調させ、端末の方向に電波を集中させるビームフォーミングや、同じ周波数と時間枠で複数の端末にデータを送る空間多重を利用できる。これにより、電波が届く範囲を広げ、限られた周波数帯でより多くの通信を処理できるようにする。
Qualcommは、RUとDUの両方で消費電力あたりの処理性能を高め、基地局を大規模に展開する際のコストを抑える狙いがある。
