Preferred Networks(PFN)と米Tenstorrent(テンストレント)との共同研究が、NEDO(新エネルギー・産業技術総合開発機構)が実施する「ポスト5G情報通信システム基盤強化研究開発事業／先端半導体製造技術の開発」におけるテーマ「(f8)光電融合技術を実装したxPU設計開発」に採択された。 Tenstorrentは、AMD Zen、Apple A4/A5、Teslaの完全自動運転チップなどの設計者として知られるジム・ケラー氏による半導体開発企業。今回の研究開発プロジェクトでは、AIエージェントやフィジカルAI、AI for Science(科学研究向けのAI)など、産業/学術領域において、AIが活用される時代に向けて、学習・推論ともに高性能・高効率に実行可能な生成AI向けAIプロセッサーのシステム化を目指す。将来的に、先端半導体を国内で設計・製造できる技術を確保することが目的。2031年度まで研究開発を進め、期間終了後にはAIエージェント等での活用を想定した研究成果の事業化を目指す。役割分担として、光電融合技術と最先端パッケージング技術を活用したAIプロセッサーのシステム化技術の開発は両社が担当。最先端プロセスを応用した3次元メモリ実装技術による超高メモリバンド幅のAIチップレットの開発はPFNが、最先端プロセスによるオープンアーキテクチャベースの機密計算に対応するCPUチップレットの開発はTenstorrentが担当する。
