「山陰海岸国立公園」に指定されている豊岡市の竹野海岸は、生き物のゆりかごとなる海草などが多く生息していて、豊かな生態系が保たれています。
水深およそ5メートルの海底では、3月下旬から世界最小のイカ「ヒメイカ」の繁殖活動が始まっていて、全長およそ2センチほどのオスがメスに精子を渡す様子や、海草のアマモに産み付けられた卵などが確認されました。
