【東日本大震災】水木しげるさんが9日後に発表したアートが圧倒的。「一生忘れない絵」「死地を経験した方の作品」と振り返る声
2011年の東日本大震災の発生から3月11日で14年。これまでに確認された死者・行方不明者は、避難生活などで亡くなった「災害関連死」も含めると、2万2228人にのぼります。

『ゲゲゲの鬼太郎』などの代表作で知られる漫画家の水木しげるさん（2015年死去）が、震災の発生9日後に、米紙ニューヨーク・タイムズの日曜版で発表した作品がSNSで再び話題になっています。
版権管理会社のPRESSPOP社の2011年当時のブログによると、震災5日後の3月16日深夜にニューヨーク・タイムズ紙のアートディレクターから同社に連絡があり、水木さんに「今回の日本を襲った地震と津波による大災害についての水木さんの個人的な考察」を絵で描いてもらえないか？というオファーがあったそうです。
これを受けて3月18日夕方には「絶対に水木さんしか描けないガチンコの作品」が完成しました。
この作品は湾岸を埋め尽くす津波に無数の建物が沈む中、1本の手が助けを求めるかのように水中からを突き出しているというショッキングな物でした。震災の恐怖をストレートに描いています。
震災当時も話題になりましたが、2025年3月10日にX（旧Twitter）で日本語圏のユーザーが「賛否はあったが、圧倒的だ」と紹介すると、11日時点で6万7000件もの「いいね」がつくなど大きな反響を呼びました。

水木さんは戦時中にニューブリテン島で敵襲に合って命からがら脱出したほか、爆撃で左腕を切断するなど壮絶な戦争体験をしたことで知られています。
この作品についても「戦争で九死に一生を体験したからこそ描ける絵」という声も出ていました。
